Ballroom Dancing

Since Easter we have attended dance classes with Margaret Fitzgerald.  Every Wednesday at one o clock we would go down to the drama room to practice for half an hour. A few weeks later she said that we were going to do a demo. The dances that she decided on were the Cha Cha and the Waltz.
We practiced and practiced until it was perfect. So, on the 20th of June we did our demonstration. At 1.45 we the performed for rest the school.  There were only 7 people who danced they are Emily Barry, Beth Southgate, Aideen Fuller, Gemma Corcoran, Abbey May Barns, May You and Meadhbh Duffin. We loved it and we hope to do it again in September. It was amazing. It was a really great experience.

Katherine rundell

On Friday 4th of May Katherine Rundell came to our class. She talked to us about how she gets inspiration for her books. Katherine Rundell has written four books, “Rooftoppers”, “The Explorer”, “Wolf Wilder” and “The Girl Savage”. There is also a new one coming out. You better be on the lookout! She talked to us about how she writes her books. She helped us to lay out our own idea for a book.
She spoke to us about how she got the idea for”Rooftoppers". She was in university in Oxford. She did not like it there. Her friend said that there was a secret passage to get up to the roof. She went up there with her friend at night. One night she and her friend found a glass bottle up on the roof. They thought that someone lived up there. And that’s how she got the idea for" Rooftoppers".
Another one of her books is “The Explorer”. It is Illustrated by Hannah Horn. Katherine told us that she went to the Amazon Jungle. She said that she saw pink dolphins and she said she ate piranhas. Katherine Rundell said that while she was in a boat the man driving said to reverse. She asked why.  He said that there was a caiman. He said a caiman is like an alligator. Then they went spearfishing. To spearfish, you need to hold a torch over the water. Then at the last minute you strike!
She also told us that she met a tribe. She said that their houses floated on water. She spoke to them for a while and they told her that tarantula meat is very tasty! So, when Katherine returned home and found a shop that sold tarantulas, she bought one. On arriving home, she opened the tin and bit into the head! She said that it was not nice. We all thought that she was very brave to eat a tarantula.
Katherine Rundell is a great inspiration for us into the future!

School Tour

On Friday the 1st of June we went to Spike Island. Spike Island was so much fun. We went on a boat from Cobh to Spike Island. When we got there, we met our tour guide who told us about Spike Island and he gave us a tour.

First, we saw houses he said, “In the olden times the bigger the family the bigger the house”. Our tour guide showed us where Little Nellie lived and they are still trying to make Little Nellie a saint to this day. Then we went to a jail. The jail was really big. In one of the prison’s there was a mannequin it was funny. But lot’s of people were screaming. There was a whole through a door and when we looked there was a dummy staring at us. We got a tiny bit scared!

After that we had lunch. Then we played games. First we did activities with Ross. The first activity  was guards and prisoners then we did some races. We also did cups and saucers. Then we went on the obstacle course. Then we did races and we were done. We went back home on the boat. We hope you visit Spike Island as it is really great fun.

Spike Island

This year for our school tour we went to Spike Island in Cobh in Co. Cork. We got a bus from school to Cobh. When we arrived at Cobh we got a boat over to Spike Island. We sat out on deck. It was amazing.

When we landed on the island. We walked over a man-made bridge. Then we met our tour guide Jaime. When we started to walk we saw houses owned by the military. Little Nellie lived in one of the houses. We had to walk up a big hill to enter the prison. We were allowed to go where ever we wanted. We also went to the ringfort. It was very well hidden. Next we went to the punishment block. We walked around it. Then we went to the gun room. There was tanks and cannon shooters. It was all very impressive artillery. Then we had lunch.

After lunch we did the activities. We were split in two groups. Half of us were doing an obstacle course and the other half of us played guards and convicts. Then we had to get the hoola hoop around the circle.  We also played cups and saucers. Then the two groups swapped. After that we walked up and found a green area.  Then we looked at the tunnels. There were three tunnels but only one is open to the public. By the time we were finished it was time to go. Then we went back to the boat and got on the bus and went home. Half way there the radiator leaked and the bus broke down. We really enjoyed Spike Island!

  The Opera

On the 29th of May we went to the Blackwater Valley Opera in the Lismore Castle. We went with the school and we met in the playground car park at 7:30pm. We went with Mrs O’ Mahony, Ms O’ Mahony, Mr Phelan and Mrs Kennefick. We went into a large auditorium and 4th class got front row seats. Then “l’Italiana in Algeiri” began.
A man came out and told the audience not to eat or drink during the performance. Two women came in drunk and dizzy and fell onto a pile of cushions. Then the man running the hotel came in and started singing for an Italian woman. Then he cut up all his old wife’s credit cards. Then the chorus came in. A ship was wrecked at sea and an Italian woman washed up on the shore and decided to stay in his hotel.
We enjoyed it very much. We got home at 11pm, we were so tired. So that is the end of our great day!

                                                      Golf Lesson

On the 28th of May in the school hall we played golf. Jennifer gave us golf clubs to hit the balls. We found it interesting. Robbie Chadwick and Connor Fitzgerald got badges that say “I love golf”. Jennifer told us that we had to hold the golf club in front of us in a “y “shape. When you swing the golf club it can’t be higher than your hip. When you finish you must hold your pose for 3 seconds.
Jennifer put a velcro triangular pyramid that had 10, 20 and 50 points displayed on it. We had to try to hit a number. Two people in fourth class got a hole-in-one. Jennifer said to our teacher, Mrs O’ Mahony that if she got it over the bar she would give us a night off homework! After the lesson Jennifer gave us an orange band that said” I love golf “. Over all we had a good time.

Katherine Rundell

One day teacher started reading to us a book called “The Explorer” by Katherine Rundell. It’s a very interesting read about four kids called Fred, Max, Con and Lila who crash- landed in the Amazon Rainforest. After two weeks of reading the Explorer, our teacher told us that the author would be coming in to talk to us on Friday the 4th of May.

In a fortnight she came in, and talked to us about some of her other books she wrote like “The Wolf Wilder” and “Rooftoppers” and how she ate everything and did everything that she wrote about. Then she gave some good writing tips like you should start near the end of the book and find something that will clear your mind, she cleared her mind by walking across a small tightrope. She then helped us make up our own small story. We then thanked her for coming and applauded her.

Thanks for reading

Katherine Rundell
On the 4th of May the best-selling author Kate Rundell came to our class. She has written 5 books already, which are “The Girl Savage”, “Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms”, “Wolf Wilder”,   “Rooftopers” and “The Explorer”. She has also written a movie clip called “Henry the Hedgehog’’. Her favourite hobby is climbing on rooftops at 4:00 in the morning wearing black [She is not a robber]. She also went to the Amazon where she ate a tarantula and a piranha [which also ate the tour guide's finger!].
She helped us make the start of a story about Barry, a random boy, and April an ordinary witch. In it there is an army of Donald Trumps and killer clowns and it is based in LISMORE CASTLE! I hope it becomes a real story. She told us a lot about her life and that every day she walks on her tight rope in her office in her ballet shoes. She’s taking flying lessons in a small yellow aeroplane. In the Amazon she met a sloth and ate grubs. We think that the class enjoyed her talk and we thought that it was very inspiring.
