Swimming Lessons

On Tuesday 14^th May, we started our 6 week swimming course at “Aura Leisure Centre” Youghal. The 2 buses left Lismore at 11:20 sharp. When we arrived we got changed into our togs and had a “Pre-Clearance Shower”. Soon after we did the test to see which of the 4 groups we would be in. Each lesson was 45 minutes including 5 minutes of playtime at the end.                                 

                On the way home we were all looking forward to diving into our lunchboxes to get some well-deserved nourishment.

               On the last week of swimming everyone got a chance to go down the long and windy water-slide. We all enjoyed the lessons and all of us learned something new. We would highly recommend Aura Leisure Centre as they have very friendly and considerate staff. We would like to thank the Parents Council for partly funding the cost of the swimming lessons.

Our School Tour

School Tour

On a lovely sunny Friday (7^th of June) 3^rd  and 4^th class hopped on a bus to WIT Arena. When we got  there, we hopped off  the bus in excitement and hoped that it wouldn’t rain. We walked in and met our coaches. Their names were Alan and Ryan. First we played rounders it was so fun, second we did orienteering. We split into two groups, it was fun but it was tiring. Next we had lunch. 
     After lunch we went on a bouncy castle and obstacle course. Then we played handball. We split into three groups, one played on the KMX go-carts, while the other groups played handball. Then we had lunch. Next we cycled the Greenway. It was the best school tour ever!

Papier Maché

On Wednesday the twelfth of June we started making our paper-maché. Our teacher looked up on the internet ideas for us to create. We didn’t realize all the things that we could make with just a balloon and newspaper.

This is how to make a paper-maché pig.

…………….What you need................

•Balloon ×1

•A glue and water mixture

•A few sheets of newspaper

•A roll of toilet paper

•Top of shampoo bottle×1

•Toilet roll×2

•About 30cm² of cardboard

•Sticky or googly eyes

•Masking tape

•Pink and black paint

…………….How to make…………….

•Blow up a balloon to appropriate size.

•Cover the balloon in glue.

•Place a layer of newspaper over the glue.

•Cover the newspaper in glue again.

•Put a layer of toilet paper on the glue.

•Repeat the last four steps again.

•Stick the shampoo lid onto the balloon with masking tape.

•Cover on and around the shampoo bottle lid with glue and toilet paper.

•Allow  to dry for at least one day.

•Make sure it is dry, now we add the cardboard.

•Cut the toilet roll in half and stick them underneath the body with masking tape.

•Make ears and a tail and place them on the balloon with masking tape.

•Cover  the balloon with toilet paper, leave dry for  two to three days.

•Paint pig pink and black.

You now have a cute pink pig! We showed you how to make a pig but you can make whatever you want with similar steps!

Our Ukulele Concert

            

At the start of the year we started ukulele classes with Mr. Harries. We learned the chords C, F, C7, Am, G and later on the year we learned Dm, D Major and Em. With the chords we also learned songs such as “Three Little Birds”, “Budapest”, “Jingle Bells”, “Paradise”, “Shotgun”, “Stand by me" and “Perfect”.

 For Saint Patrick’s Day we played Shotgun in Irish and we had loads of fun. Near the end of the year we had a concert and played "Stand by me" by Ben E King.

T.Q.S. Surprise

On the 17^th of June T.Q.S. came to our school with Pepper the robot. Jeff and his colleague           introduced us to Pepper. There are only two of these robots in Ireland. This robot was made in Paris and brought to Ireland for T.Q.S. to design and programme.

 If you make eye contact with Pepper then she will look and speak to you. Pepper's height is 1m 20cm. Pepper had a touch screen on her chest. Jeff pressed a button and nine Waterford hurlers came up on the screen. Maurice Shanahan, Brick Walsh , Jack Prendergast, Shane Bennett, Stephen Bennett, Kieran Bennett, Austin Gleeson, Seanie Barry and Tommy Ryan. T.Q.S. sponsor the Waterford hurling team. When Jeff pressed on Seanie Barry Pepper said   “Seanie Barry likes funky music”. And Pepper made some funky moves.

                Then Jeff told us that they are teaching Pepper to speak Spanish and Japanese. Then Pepper said “Slán anois”

T.Q.S. Integration Robot

On Monday we had a special guest from T.Q.S. Integration Centre. Her name is Pepper and she was here to spice up our lives! She was a robot. The two men from T.Q.S. had to programme her on a computer. When she started to play the saxophone we all laughed, because it was funny. When the man touched one of the Waterford hurlers a random song came on. When the man touched one of the Waterford hurlers a random joke came up. Then we had to copy Pepper do some yoga. I hope you like this!

Towers and Tales

On the 3^rd of May we all went to the castle. We all went to see the author of “Dirty Bertie”. He has written many other books on “Dirty Bertie” and a few other stories. He illustrated some other author’s books. When we all came to Lismore Castle we passed a room where there was a man made of books, it was very big and impressive! Once we came into the Pugin Room we all got into our seats. We all saw a Projector on the wall and under it we all saw some other books that’s were not “Dirty Bertie”.

        He introduced himself as “David Roberts”. He welcomed us with a smile. He showed us the Original “Dirty Bertie” book and other books that he wrote. Then after that, we played a game where we had to pick something crazy and he had to draw it. The person who won that game was “Ella Hickey”.

        On the 2^nd game the person who won was “Niamh O’Mahony”. They received his drawings as the prize and his signature on the drawing.

                 We had the pleasure of him drawing his favourite characters.

It was Amazing!!

Gardening

We started our gardening project before Easter. We planted potatoes, carrots, turnips, beetroot, peas, beans and salad leaves. We have four raised beds. We learned that we needed bamboo sticks to support the peas and beans as they grew. We also had a problem with cats and birds eating our plants.

        We had to place netting over and around our garden to protect them.We have been keeping a diary. We record everything we do and we also draw pictures of the plants. We have really enjoyed it and we have put learned that it is far safer to grow your own vegetables as you don’t know what sprays have put on the veg you buy the shop.

Peace Proms 2019

The day was finally here, it was the 10th of  February 2019 and we were on the way to the Peace Proms. We got on the bus to go to Waterford with excitement. Once we got there we all lined up to go to the bathroom before dancing and singing. After we were finished we sat down and had lunch. Now it was time for the show to begin and we all stood up and started singing MAKE SOME NOISE!

We performed so many fun songs that we started to sweat from the lights. We were singing and dancing for two and a half hours and our whole body began to ache. It was all over so we went to the
"Park Hotel" for a delicious meal. We could either have "Chips and Goujons"or"Roast of the Day".It was a wonderful time and we had a spectacular meal . We really enjoyed it and we can't wait to do it

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019

Bhí an-spórt againn i rith Seachtain an Gaeilge. Bhí taispeántas ar siúl gach tráthnóna sa seomra drámaíochta. Maidin Dé hAoine, chuaigh na daltaí go léir amach sa chlós chun Amhrán na bhFiann a chanadh nuair a bhí na buachaillí ag ardú brat na hÉireann.
              Tráthnóna Dé hAoine,bhíomar ar bís. Sheasamar ar an ardán sa seomra drámaíochta réidh chun canadh. Bhí ár ukukele linn. Bhí rang a trí linn freisin chun "Shotgun" a chanadh as gaeilge.

Feis Maitiú Competition

We have been preparing for the Feis Mathiú choir competition since the start of the year! The  competition took place in the Father Mathew hall in Cork,on the 28th of February.The choir left the school at 8:15am on the morning of the competition.During the ride to Cork on our lively bus,we unexpectedly slowed to a halt.We peered out of the window to see why we had stopped. Unfortunately we were stuck in traffic!Ms. O'Mahony took this oppurtunity to give us one more practice of our two songs and give us a few tips to remember.
                   When we got off the bus we went into the Father Maitiú Hall. We sang "The Birds Lament" and "The Wizard" We all felt a bit shy facing the audience but once we started singing we forgot all about them!After we all felt fine.Then we watched all the other choirs.Once they announced the results we came second, we were all delighted, the teachers said we did our best!
                    When we boarded the bus the teachers had a surprise for us,they were  taking us to Mc Donalds in Midelton! After Mc Donalds we went back to school. Everyone had a great day out!

RSA Safety Talk

One February day in 2019, Alexandra and Naoimi  visited Bunscoil Bhóthar na Naomh to give us a safety talk.The two R.S.A ladies spoke to us about how deadly the road could be.
                                       We all had a try to guess how many people died on the road in 2016. To our great surprise, it was forty-nine, a lot more than we ever have thought.
                                 After Alexandra told us how many people, a few volunteers chosen randomly from our class came up to the top. Then Alexandra checked to see if these people were safe in a car without a booster-seat by using measurement.
                                    After that speech we were divided into pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. We stepped out onto the model village. Next the drivers and cyclists were given push-on unicycles.
                                                  Afterwards we were officially declared safe pedestrians with our own four-star safety licences.

"Gerard, Linda and Andrea played the "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by Mozart. We all thought that it was an amazing piece! It was a spectacular experience."

Maxi Zoo

A lady named Emma came into our class today. She was from Maxi Zoo. Emma brought two cute guinea pigs with her. They were called Ben and Jerry. Emma taught us about how to treat our pets well. The main things she emphasized was animal welfare, respect, legislation, socialisation and education. It was very interesting. They are called the five freedoms every animal deserves. 

           Emma took out Ben and Jerry from their cage and we got to pet Jerry. He was so fluffy. At the end of the session, Emma gave us certificates. We are officially declared Maxi Zoo animal friends.

                                         

                                     

Singing and Strumming

The ukulele is a wonderful instrument and easy to play. On 28th of September Mr. Colin Harries arrived in our school. He began teaching pupils from 3rd and 4th classes the ukulele and last week we learned how to play "Jingle Bells". We have learned seven songs and look forward to Friday's now! Our last lesson before Christmas was on December 14th. We are looking forward to learning "Budapest" by George Ezra in the New Year. We really like this song. Another song that we have learned is "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley. This song includes chords G, C and F#. We really liked singing the tunes and strumming our ukes!

Gymnastic Lessons

 The first day week we met Kenny and Mikey we did tumbles, rock and rolls and shoulder rolls. In the second lesson we did the V position and the dish position. In the third lesson we did donkey kicks and tumbles.The fourth lesson we learned how to do donkey kicks, hand stands and cart wheels. Then we devised a routine. This was great fun and we all loved it.

                                       

Science Week 2018

We had great fun during Science Week conducting experiments. Creating a magnetic based car race was very enjoyable. 

      

Magnets attract magnetic objects through other materials e.g. cardboard,glass,water or plastic.

Let's investigate

Equipment:

• .Paper and scissors 
• . A large sheet of cardboard 
• .Crayons or markers
• .2 steel paper clips
• .2 magnets

Procedure:

1. Draw 2 small cars

2. Colour each car

3. Attach the template to your paper box

4. Place the paper clip inside the car

5. Draw 2 courses on the cardboard.Make a start and finish line. Colour.

6. Tape the magnets to ends of each ruler (this is your wand!)

7. Position the magnetic wands underneath the cardboard,under the cars so that you can begin your race!

Findings

1. Removing the magnet from the ruler and holding the magnet in our hand under the race track allowed the car to move better on the course. 

How to make a Clay Pumpkin Lantern

This is a fun thing to do! Follow these steps carefully to make a delightful Halloween pumpkin lantern.

You will need: 

• potter's clay
• clay knife
• paint and paintbrushes
• PVA glue and water
• newspaper

Method:

1. Roll your clay into a ball and throw your clay from one hand to the other to soften.
2. When soft put your thumb inside and make a bowl or cup (pinch pot) and smooth out until there are no lumps or cracks.
3. Choose a face you would like to do and carve carefully with the clay knife. If you find that your clay is going hard then wet your hands.If you would like to make ridges,  you can.
4. Leave to dry for at least five days on a windowsill. Paint when dry.

    5.When the paint is dry put on a layer of pva glue and allow to dry.When dry put a tealight in and light.

This will make a lovely centre piece on your table for Halloween!

Ballroom Dancing

Since Easter we have attended dance classes with Margaret Fitzgerald.  Every Wednesday at one o clock we would go down to the drama room to practice for half an hour. A few weeks later she said that we were going to do a demo. The dances that she decided on were the Cha Cha and the Waltz. 

                                We practiced and practiced until it was perfect. So, on the 20^th of June we did our demonstration. At 1.45 we the performed for rest the school.  There were only 7 people who danced they are Emily Barry, Beth Southgate, Aideen Fuller, Gemma Corcoran, Abbey May Barns, May You and Meadhbh Duffin. We loved it and we hope to do it again in September. It was amazing. It was a really great experience.

The Cha Cha!

Katherine rundell

On Friday 4^th of May Katherine Rundell came to our class. She talked to us about how she gets inspiration for her books. Katherine Rundell has written four books, “Rooftoppers”, “The Explorer”, “Wolf Wilder” and “The Girl Savage”. There is also a new one coming out. You better be on the lookout! She talked to us about how she writes her books. She helped us to lay out our own idea for a book.

                      She spoke to us about how she got the idea for”Rooftoppers". She was in university in Oxford. She did not like it there. Her friend said that there was a secret passage to get up to the roof. She went up there with her friend at night. One night she and her friend found a glass bottle up on the roof. They thought that someone lived up there. And that’s how she got the idea for" Rooftoppers".

               Another one of her books is “The Explorer”. It is Illustrated by Hannah Horn. Katherine told us that she went to the Amazon Jungle. She said that she saw pink dolphins and she said she ate piranhas. Katherine Rundell said that while she was in a boat the man driving said to reverse. She asked why.  He said that there was a caiman. He said a caiman is like an alligator. Then they went spearfishing. To spearfish, you need to hold a torch over the water. Then at the last minute you strike!

           She also told us that she met a tribe. She said that their houses floated on water. She spoke to them for a while and they told her that tarantula meat is very tasty! So, when Katherine returned home and found a shop that sold tarantulas, she bought one. On arriving home, she opened the tin and bit into the head! She said that it was not nice. We all thought that she was very brave to eat a tarantula.

Katherine Rundell is a great inspiration for us into the future!
